De-escalation: Options for Gaining Compliance

Course Hours: 1.0 Hours

Course Description

De-escalation is a tool officers can use to help people who are experiencing either a mental health or personal crisis, which exceed the individual's ability to cope. The behavior of a person in crisis is controlled by emotions, rather than logical thinking. While de-escalation techniques are often effective, they are not always applicable. Knowing how and when to employ de-escalation techniques is critical for law enforcement officers. Upon completion of this course, students will receive 1 hour POST credit and will satisfy the 2018 Governor's Initiative.
